Crossing the border from Singapore to Johor Bahru (JB) can sometimes mean long queues and lots of waiting.
But if you’ve got an e-passport and you’re not a Singapore passport holder, there’s now a much faster way, the autogate JB (also called e-gate).
Here’s a quick, no-stress guide to help you get through immigration faster.
Overview
Step 1: Fill Up & Submit MDAC Within 3 Days Prior To Arrival At JB Checkpoint / Second Link Checkpoint
Step 2: Enrol & Verify Passport At Manual Counter
Step 3: Use Autogate For Your Next & Subsequent Trips
Alternatives If Rejected
Overview
Autogate is an automated immigration system at JB’s two main checkpoints, Woodlands and Second Link.
Instead of lining up at the manual counters, you just scan your passport, go through the electronic gates, and you’re done.
It’s quick, easy, and especially helpful during peak hours.
The best part?
Non-Singapore passport holders from selected countries can now use it too!
As long as you’ve got an e-passport (with a microchip symbol) and at least three months’ validity.
But there are a few steps to follow.
Step 1: Fill Up & Submit MDAC Within 3 Days Prior To Arrival At JB Checkpoint / Second Link Checkpoint
Before heading to JB, you’ll need to fill in the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC).
It only takes a few minutes and can be done online here. Just make sure to submit it within three days before your arrival.
No MDAC, no autogate, so don’t skip this step.
It’s a smoother way to reach the checkpoint, especially during peak hours.
Autogate JB Eligibility Requirements
To use Autogate JB, you’ll need:
- An e-passport with at least 3 months’ validity
- Citizenship from one of the eligible countries.
- Kids under 120cm still need to be accompanied by parents and use the manual counters.
- Eligible entry modes for using Autogate JB include train and bus passengers.
Step 2: Enrol & Verify Passport At Manual Counter
When you reach JB for the first time, head to a manual immigration counter.
Show your passport and your MDAC confirmation.
The officer will verify and enrol your details for MACS 2.0 (Malaysia’s Autogate system).
This only needs to be done once.
For those holding a Singapore passport, refer to this guide on how to use autogate JB for Singapore passport holder instead.
Book a Private Taxi: If you’ve already submitted your MDAC and want to avoid the hassle of public transport queues, consider booking a private taxi to JB from Singapore. |

Step 3: Use Autogate For Your Next & Subsequent Trips
After that first-time registration, just keep submitting your MDAC online before every trip and head straight to the autogate lanes.
It’s fast and saves you from long queues.
If you forget to submit the MDAC, you’ll have to go through the manual lane again, so set a reminder!
Alternatives If Rejected
If fingerprints aren’t recognized or the system glitches, don’t waste time retrying.
Proceed directly to the manual immigration counters.
Officers can clear you manually, and queues may move faster if most travelers are attempting autogate
